Developing awareness of ‘’the body that we are’’

Emotional Gymnastics® (EG) is an educational somatic approach. The word soma, from the Greek, refers to the living, sensitive body. It fosters a holistic understanding of the human being by integrating the physical, emotional, sensory, and cognitive dimensions into a unified whole.

The practice of Emotional Gymnastics® fosters a conscious relationship between the body, space, and our inner world. As we become aware of how the different parts of the body move through space, we begin to sense our neuromuscular organization and how our life story is expressed through posture and movement. From birth, our body continuously adapts to the experiences of life and to the many physical, emotional, and social environments we encounter. Over time, some areas may become more rigid or less responsive, leading us to live in our body only partially, as if fragmented.

This lack of organization may appear as reduced mobility, a sense of heaviness or rigidity, and a decline in vital energy. The practice of Emotional Gymnastics® supports the restoration of bodily coherence and helps us reconnect with the perception of the body as an integrated whole.

Although our muscles may sometimes grow rigid or tense, they remain alive and capable of change. Through gentle, precise movements that honor the body’s physiology, Emotional Gymnastics® invites the release of tension, the return of suppleness, and the awakening of vitality. This process unfolds naturally, without forcing, in an attitude of mindful presence and inner listening.

The transformation in form and presence reflects the emergence of deeper body awareness and a more grounded connection with the self.

The posterior muscle chain

We have tremendous strength within our body—it lies in the back. It is called the posterior muscle chain (PMC). Unlike the muscles in the front, the ones located in the back are all aligned in the same direction and interlock with one another like the tiles of a roof. This chain of muscles begins at the top of the skull and extends along the nape of the neck, the shoulders, the back, the buttocks, the legs, and all the way down to the toes.

These muscles are constantly involved in maintaining our posture and supporting our everyday movements. Over time, the tone of this chain tends to increase and shorten, which can alter our posture and affect the way we move or breathe.

When this chain is overloaded or overused, our back can become less mobile or more tense, and we may feel a loss of flexibility or lightness in our movements. These changes are not an inevitable part of aging, but rather the sign of a bodily adaptation that we can observe and rebalance through conscious practice.

Emotional Gymnastics® (EG) offers precise and respectful movements that awaken awareness of this chain, restore length in the muscular tissues, and reestablish a more harmonious coordination between the back, the breath, and the rest of the body.
